How Credit Scores Are Calculated

Your FICO score is built from five factors: payment history (35%), amounts owed (30%), length of credit history (15%), new credit (10%), and credit mix (10%). Understanding each one tells you exactly where to focus your energy first.

How to Read Your Credit Report

Your report has four main sections: personal information, account history, public records, and inquiries. Errors in any section can drag your score down. Pull your free report at AnnualCreditReport.com and review all three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — separately.

Your Rights Under the FCRA

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the legal right to dispute any inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information on your credit report. Bureaus have 30 days to investigate and must remove items they cannot verify. You do not need a lawyer or a credit repair company to exercise this right.

Your Rights Under the FDCPA

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act protects you from abusive, unfair, or deceptive debt collectors. You have the right to request debt validation in writing within 30 days of first contact. Once you send a validation letter, the collector must stop collection activity until they provide proof.

How the Dispute Process Works

You send a dispute letter to the credit bureau (or directly to the creditor) identifying the item, explaining why it is inaccurate, and requesting removal or correction. The bureau opens an investigation, contacts the furnisher, and must respond within 30–45 days. If the item cannot be verified, it must be deleted.

Medical Debt & HIPAA Disputes

Medical collections are among the most commonly disputed items. Under HIPAA, a debt collector cannot receive or report your medical information without your written authorization. A properly written HIPAA dispute letter challenges the collector's right to report the debt at all — not just its accuracy.
